All Nippon Airways (ANA) has a frequent flyer program called Mileage Club. Memberaus earn miles by spending with ANA, airline partners and other partners like hotels and rental car companies.
See our best credit card bonuses here.
ANA miles can then be redeemed for flights, travel and a variety of other options. Each mile holds decent value. So if you regularly travel to Japan, or anywhere in the world, you’ll want to take a closer look at ANA Mileage Club.

Earning ANA Miles With Transfer Partners
The First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO) issues an ANA co-branded credit card that earns ANA miles. But we don’t recommend it because of the card’s poor earn rate.
American Express Membership Rewardsยฎ and Marriott Bonvoy are both ANA Mileage Club transfer partners. So we suggest earning points on those cards instead, then converting them to ANA miles.
Rewards Program | Transfer Ratio |
American Express Membership Rewardsยฎ | 1:1 |
Marriott Bonvoy | 3:1* |
*Get a 5,000-miles bonus when you transfer 60,000 Marriott points. That means instead of 20,000 ANA miles, you’ll get 25,000.
We recommend the following credit cards offering points for those two reward programs:
THE PLATINUM CARDยฎ FROM AMERICAN EXPRESS
Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Enrollment may be required for select American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.
The Platinum Cardยฎ from American Express has a special offer for 100,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 in purchases within your first 6 months.
Membership Rewardsยฎ points are some of the most valuable in the market. Redeeming these points by booking travel through American Express or by redeeming for gift cards will give you a standard 1 cent per point value. The 100k bonus points are worth $1,000 going this route.
You can potentially get more value by transferring your points to Membership Rewards travel partners. Using this strategy can get you up to an average value of 2 cents per point. Get around $2,000 in value with 100,000 points this way. Read more on this here.
With this card, earn 5X Membership Rewardsยฎ Points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year.
The biggest drawback to this card is the $695 annual fee (see Rates & Fees, Terms Apply), which puts it in the premium class of credit cards. The card has a market because it offers premium travel benefits, such as 5X points for flights (up to $500,000 on these purchases) and eligible hotels, access to 40+ Centurion Loung and Studio locations worldwide, up to $200 airline fee credit annually, and an annual Walmart+ membership. These benefits are given as statement credits.
For frequent travelers, the added benefits make sense in terms of value and added luxury.
AMERICAN EXPRESSยฎ GOLD CARD
Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Enrollment may be required for select American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.
The American Expressยฎ Gold Card has a welcome bonus for 60,000 Membership Rewards Points when you spend $4,000 within 6 months.
Membership Rewards Points have great flexibility. We value each point to be worth up to an average 2 cents per point. At this value, 60k Membership Rewards Points can be worth up to $1,200.
The Amex Gold Card has plentiful perks. You’ll get:
- Choice between Gold or Rose Gold.
- 4X points at restaurants, including takeouts and deliveries in the U.S.
- 4X points at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000 per year in purchases (1X thereafter)

Redeeming ANA Miles
ANA miles expire at the end of the 36th month from which they were earned. For example, ANA miles earned on October 15, 2019 will expire on October 31, 2022.
Unfortunately, the only way to extend your miles’ expiration is to have ANA Diamond status.
Mileage Club uses three different award charts. One for flying ANA within Japan, one when flying ANA or Air Japan internationally, and one for flying with a partner airline.
One-way awards start at 5,000 ANA miles for flights within Japan.
ANA Group international flights start at 12,000 miles one-way.
Unfortunately, blackout dates do apply:

ANA Mileage Club Tips & Tricks
Flying business class on an award ticket usually yields a better value than if you were to fly economy. With that in mind, here are some of the best ways to use your ANA miles.
Airline | From – To | Class | ANA Miles |
United | N. America – Japan (roundtrip) | Business | 85,000 |
United | N. America – Japan (one-way) | Business | 55,000 |

ANA does not have fuel surcharges on its award tickets, but partner carriers might. To keep your cash costs down, you’ll want to avoid booking award flights with the following airline partners:
- Air India
- Austrian Airlines
- Brussels Airlines
- EgyptAir
- Lufthansa
- South African Airways
- SWISS
- TAP Air Portugal
- Thai Airways
With Toku-Tabi Mile promotions, you can book a one-way award flight from just 3,000 ANA miles (regularly from 5,000 miles).
These weekly offers only apply to certain ANA Japan domestic routes. Eligible routes along with mileage requirements will be announced at around 17:00 two days before the start of the campaign. Check current Toku-Tabi Mile promotions here.
Most loyalty programs no longer offer Round The World awards, but ANA still does. And at very reasonable rates. Before you transfer all your Membership Rewards to your Mileage Club account, make sure you understand all the nuances to ANA’s Round The World awards.
Keep in mind:
- You must fly either East to West or West to East. There is no backtracking allowed.
- You must cross both the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans (only once each if you follow the above rule).
- You can include up to 12 flight segments and 4 ground transfer segments.
- You may have up to 8 stopovers (3 in Europe and 4 in Japan).
- Your trip must last at least 10 days from the date of your first international departure.
- Flights must be operated by ANA or Star Alliance partners.
- Your itinerary must touch all three “Areas” or zones.
- Your itinerary must start and end at the same place.
There’s no need to worry about different low, regular and high season award rates. ANA Round The World has flat mileage pricing based on your total flight miles.
The highest class of service you book on any leg of your Round The World Journey will determine which rate you’ll “pay” for your Round The World award. That means if you book just one segment in business class, you’ll have to pay the business class rate for your entire itinerary.
Bottom Line
Although it’s not an obvious choice, ANA Mileage Club holds a lot of value. Even if you don’t fly often to Japan and especially if you’re a frequent Star Alliance flyer and an Amex Membership Rewards cardholder.
